The Hollywood Reporter has just announced that Hartley Sawyer, who playes Elongated Man on The Flash on the CW Network, has been fired over tweets that have been deemed misogynistic, racist, and homophobic.
The tweets, dating from 2011 through 2014, were all posted before he began his stint on the DC Comics supehero show about the Fastest Man Alive, and read:
- If I had a wife I would beat the hell out of her tonight lol
- The only thing keeping me from doing mildly racist tweets is the knowledge that Al Sharpton would never stop complaining about me.
- Personally I don't think I would ever 'let a thug hit it' but that's just me.
In a statement from the CW and showrunner Eric Wallace, detailing the termination of Sawyer's role, read in part: "In regards to Mr. Sawyer's posts on social media, we do not tolerate derogatory remarks that target any race, ethnicity, national origin, gender or sexual orientation. Such remarks are antithetical to our values and polices, which strive and evolve to promote a safe, inclusive and productive environment for our workforce."
Sawyer has deleted his Twitter account and apologized on Instagram. Which, in this reviewer's opinion, were the only two real mistakes he made.
