DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year is a fun adventure for the whole family. Whether you're young or old, a comic book reader or not, this movie has appeal for the entire family.

On the surface, HERO OF THE YEAR appears to be another story about villains trying to rule the world. But when you dig a little deeper into the characters, there's so much more to it. Each character has their own developing story arc that allows them to grow as the movie progresses. The movie was extremely entertaining, funny and action packed. The cameos were fun to see and the voice talent will be recognized by fans of other DC animated properties.

The Comic Book Fan's Perspective:

The animated movie is full of enough material to make a re-watch necessary. Your first time through you are watching because it's about your favorite super hero girls, but as the story progresses you find yourself getting excited to see all the wonderful additions to the background. There are plenty of 'easter eggs' for the comic book fan to look for, from artifacts to characters there is a lot happening to make Super Hero High feel like a fully active campus. The dialogue contains references to source material that comic book fans will love. You may end up needing a second viewing and a checklist!

The Parent's Perspective:

If your child has gained an interest in DC's Super Hero Girls, congratulations! This animated movie is a perfect addition to your growing collection of kids movies. Without any prior knowledge to the universe that surrounds Super Hero High, you'll be able to sit back and enjoy all the fantastical elements. All the characters are fun, have unique personalities, and have their own important role to play. Don't worry, if you're a parent that has a lot going on and prefers to stay busy while the movie plays, your children will get plenty of enjoyment out of this film. But it's not all slapstick and silly jokes. Some of the story elements that your kids will be exposed to are:

  • The classic struggle of good vs evil
  • Discovering your self-worth
  • Making sacrifices
  • Family
  • Friendship
  • Acceptance
  • Appreciating what you have
  • And so much more...!

The Kid's Perspective:

The story has a lot of adventure and plenty of fast-paced action. Slapstick comedy is on full display to keep kids in front of the tv as the story plays out and there's plenty of 'silliness' stirred in. While younger kids may have trouble following the actual plot, the villains are clear so children won't have any trouble following the 'good vs evil' story. Older kids will pick up on many of the more 'moral themes' provided throughout the film.

So what’s the movie about?

As the girls of Super Hero High prepare for the ceremony that will announce who is named “Hero of the Year” a new student arrives on campus: Big Barda! When important items begin to turn up missing, suspicion has fingers pointing at her as she is known to have a bad side, in the past. Meanwhile the stone that Supergirl wears around her neck, begins giving her visions of her parents back on Krypton. What does it all mean? Who is stealing the artifacts around campus? Who will be crowned “Hero of the Year”? The answer may surprise you!

DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year will have you watching closely, as the most powerful girls in the galaxy navigate the twists and turns of high school, while mastering the fundamentals of being a hero.

The DVD features six animated shorts:

  • Hero of the Month: Wonder Woman
  • Fall into Super Hero High
  • Hero of the Month: Bumblebee
  • Hero of the Month: Poison Ivy
  • Clubbing
  • Saving the Day

The movie features some of the top voice actors in the industry.  Grey Griffin (Wonder Woman), Anais Fairweather (Supergirl), Mae Whitman (Batgirl/Barbara Gordon), Tara Strong (Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy) Teala Dunn (Bumblebee), and Stephanie Sheh (Katana) join forces to portray some of the newest students to attend Super Hero High.

With an SRP of $19.98, this family adventure for you and your little ones is priced to enjoy. The movie has a run-time of 72 minutes which is a good balance between ‘getting your money’s worth’ and not spending the whole day in front of your tv.

So “Get Your Cape On” and bring this adventure home for the whole family to enjoy. I highly recommend it.
