Back in February we told you about Netlix and Dreamworks partnering on a new Voltron series. Now, they've released a 'teaser' trailer that provides some great visuals on how Voltron comes together.

After watching it you can see the attention to detal this series will have. Dreamworks is taking this property very seriously. With a massive update to the animation and a much more serious tone, this iteration of Voltron could blow the original series out of the sky. It's often very difficult to compete with nostalgia, however looking back on the original series, the storylines were often over-simplified for a younger audience and the animation was good, but certainly not high quality.

Take a look at the trailer and see for yourself:

Here's the official synopsis:

From days long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe comes the Netflix Original Series, VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER! DreamWorks Animation reimagines one of the most popular fan-favorite shows of all time in this all-new comedic action-packed show from executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos (The Legend of Korra, Avatar: The Last Airbender) and co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery (The Legend of Korra).

Five unsuspecting teenagers, transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war, become pilots for five robotic lions in the battle to protect the universe from evil. Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite to form the mighty warrior known as VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER.

Here's the list of characters with the actor's who will play them:

  • Princess Allura – Kimberly Brooks (Ben 10: Omniverse, Justice League: War)
  • Coran – Rhys Darby (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Concords)
  • Shiro, Black Lion – Josh Keaton (Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Transformers Prime)
  • Hunk, Yellow Lion – Tyler Labine (Reaper, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil)
  • Lance, Blue Lion – Jeremy Shada (Finn in Adventure TimeBatman: The Brave and the Bold)
  • Pidge, Green Lion – Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow, Scream: The Series, iZombie)
  • Keith, Red Lion – Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, The Legend of Korra)

That animation makes me angry that not a single recent version of Transformers can compete with it. Someday we'll get animators more serious about rebooting the more popular Hasbro franchise, but until then I'll live vicariously though Voltron. As a child of the 80's and a big fan of the concept that was born out of Lions turning into Robots, I cannot express how excited I am to go on this journey. Tune into Netflix on June 10th to stream, what looks to be, an epic sci-fi animated series!
