Supergirl v. Miley

I understand the need to be a critic. Heck, for me it’s a way of life! So if you don’t like something that I do, or you like something that I don’t, I get it. Wear what you dig, live and let live.

But when your criticism is based on something ludicrous, well, expect your criticism to be critiqued. We can do that.

Case in point: Miley Cyrus. The former Disney good girl Hannah Montana was recently interviewed by Variety, where she spoke on a bunch of things important to her, including the CW show, SUPERGIRL, for, of all things, perpetuating gender stereotypes.

“I think having a show with a gender attached to it is weird,” she said. At first pointing out that the character is a woman and “not a little girl,” she further clarified her position by pointing out that SUPERGIRL may make the transgender community get a case of the sads. “What if you’re a little boy who wants to be a girl so bad that this makes you feel bad? I think having a title like “Supergirl” doesn’t give the power that people think it does."

Cyrus, a self-declared ‘pansexual’ (I’m fairly up on all the newly discovered genders, but this one worries me; I’m protecting my cookware just in case), seems to have not been asked this question in the past, when she could have protected us against the gender-cruelty of films like MAN OF STEEL, IRON MAN, GONE GIRL, or GIRL ON A TRAIN, or television shows that force such gender stereotypes in their titles like 2 BROKE GIRLS, LAST MAN STANDING, or FAMILY GUY.

As for giving power, I think I’ll just let the following images -- featuring Melissa Benoist, Girl Scouts, and, oh yeah, the Leader of the Free World -- speak for themselves.
