Revenge Best Served in High Definition: "I Spit on Your Grave" Comes to 4K

The 1978 film I Spit on Your Grave has been talked about since the film’s creation; and now, 43 years later, Jennifer gets her revenge again in ultra-gory, High Definition, in-your-face 4K!

However, it does need to be said: “Just how many versions, cuts, and different pressings of this film do you really need?”  The answer is: just this one. Ronin Films has given us the definitive edition this year with this brand new 4K, and brings all the special features from the previous editions along for the blood-soaked ride.

For those of you who have lived in a cave and never heard of this film, the plot is a simple one, but it sets the stage for every revenge horror film that has ever been released after it. A young writer named Jennifer (Camille Keaton) takes a retreat to a secluded cabin on a lake to clear her mind for her next story. While lounging on a hammock outside, some of the local derelicts swing by on their motor boat, see her on the shore and begin to catcall her. Disgusted, Jennifer retreats back to her cabin and away from the prying eyes.

Enraged by her not giving them attention, the heathens then return with a couple of their friends and set out to rape, torture, and ultimately kill her and leave her for dead in the swamp. Not wanting to do it themselves, they give the task of slitting Jennifer’s throat to the simple-minded, mentally challenged character, who finds he can’t, but lies and says he carried out the dastardly deed.

Jennifer, bruised, beaten, and in a daze, makes her way back to her cabin, mends her wounds and, like any good writer, begins to plot out the revenge she will bring onto the bastards that did this to her. And as you would have guessed by the title, she takes the revenge she is owed (along with a few of the body parts) from the gang to make sure they never do this to another woman again.

Ronin Films also offers the official sequel to this tale: I Spit on Your Grave: Déjà vu, in which Jennifer returns to the town where all the grisly happenings occurred and now has to contend with the families of the men she killed, who are now out for revenge of their own.

I Spit on Your Grave is, by no means, a must-see for many viewers. But for completionists and exploitation fans, it is a must add to your grindhouse horror collection.
