Why 'Spartacus' is the Underrated TV Gem of the Decade

Spartacus

Across the annals of TV history, there are a few television shows that, despite showing such promise, were abruptly and cruelly taken away from us. Such is the case with Spartacus, the gladiator-themed TV show which ran on Starz from 2010 to 2013.

Despite the big-budget, gory, and gritty series fast becoming a critical darling, as well as the most-watched TV show on the Starz network by a very wide margin, it was abruptly announced after the second season that the show was being canceled and that season three would be the last, much to the chagrin of fans the world over.

Whether you have already binge-watched Spartacus or are considering dipping your toe in the waters, just know that you are going to be experiencing one of TV's hidden gems of the decade.

Yes, It's Been 25 Years Since Superman: The Animated Series

Superman Animated Series

Perhaps one is officially old when the best versions of their favorite things date back beyond twenty years. I was pleased to find that Superman: The Animated Series was getting a Blu-ray collection of all three seasons. But I did blink at the fact that it had been twenty-five years -- a whole quarter-century -- since the show had debuted on television. And while Superman hasn't really been away from the animated theater, this particular incarnation, a by-product of the success of Batman: The Animated Series, was a show that understood the character, what he was about, and was able to tell engrossing stories that challenged the hero.

Marvel's "The Eternals" Does Its Job Despite Flaws

Marvel's "The Eternals" opens in the U.S. on November 5, 2021.

Marvel’s The Eternals isn’t a bad movie, despite what the general negativity of the internet would have you believe. No, it’s not perfect, but it’s also not Thor: The Dark World either. When The Eternals opens in the U.S. on November 5, 2021, exclusively in theaters, it will do so having already been labelled as a flop by film critics who aren’t as familiar with the source material, by comic fans who are familiar and expect every panel of the comics to be reproduced on the big screen, and by the so-called “influencers” on social media who seem dead set on "cancelling" evetything for tthe vagueist of reasons. The film is arguably Marvel’s most ambitious offering to date, and also perhaps it’s least accessible entry in their cinematic universe.

Allegations of Police Protection for Superman Artists Dubious at Best

Superman Son of Kal El

The revelation of Jon Kent's bisexuality has been a polarizing plot point among fans of the DC Comics universe of titles. And while the news was cheered by some and jeered by just as many, claims are being bandied about that the critics of the move object strongly enough to merit police protection.

This is the claim coming out of TMZ and then parroted by PinkNews, as they claim that "the artists" (generically) of Superman have received death threats to merit enough concern on the part of DC Comics that the Los Angeles Police Department was called in to patrol and protect.

US Banks Ease Standards for Payday Loans Online

The pandemic and the following lockdowns have slowed down the economic developments in many countries all over the world. The United States hasn’t become an exception. The national government is currently dealing with a surplus. Meanwhile, average people and small businesses have to struggle with their financial challenges. As a result, some urgent measures had to be taken.

US banks have decided to ease payday loans online standards. This has become a direct reaction to the recent events in the country. Terms and conditions have become loosened within short timeframes as funders struggled to keep up with new realities.

Bank lending standards were changed quickly in the second quarter to make more monetary policy more convenient and affordable and support the continuing economic recovery. Almost 25% of the market has supported this initiative immediately. Some financial institutions required more time and resources to adjust their policies to the new standards.

Covid. Cabin Fever. Capes? Inside Chris Waigand's Superhero Satire, Tights.

Tights on Kickstarter

In the world of TIGHTS, the world gets hit with COVID-21 right on the heels of COVID-19. Starting over from square one is more than the battered economy can take, and the combination of isolation, unemployment, and endless hours of Disney+ streaming content leads to the inevitable: people dressing up as superheroes to fight crime, save the city, and grab some justice for themselves.

What they most often do, however, is cause problems, get arrested, and clog up the court systems.

That's where Chris Waigand's protagonist enters. Judge Oliver Andrews has had enough with the constant barrage of would be crimefighters. They're the bane of his existence. But when a ghost from Oliver's past as s prosecuting attorney returns to turn his life into a nightmare, the judge may have to become the thing he hates in order to mete out justice.

Indie Comics Under the Radar: Cluster Fudge from Hero Shack

Cluster Fudge 2

Independent comic publishers have been with us for as long as the comics industry has been around. If you had a photocopier and a stapler, you could do your own thing and try to convince people to buy it (and some did so quite successfully).

Now with the advent of technologies like print-on-demand, not to mention the affordability of your average print shop, and the mass-marketing tools afforded by way of crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, truly anyone can try their hand at getting into the funny book business. The downside of that is that there are so many competing projects out there for your dollar that it's easy to go unnoticed if you don't raise your voice loud enough.

These Monsters Have Universal Appeal in More Ways Than One!

Universal Classic Monsters 4K collection

Halloween is when the monsters all come out. And while recent years have brought us scary slashers like Freddy and Jason, or deceptively cute killer creatures like Gremlins, Critters, or Creepsters, the foundations of fright will always be the Universal Monsters -- those monsters from classic literature brought to life on the silver screen by Universal Pictures.

Superman and Lois Turn Smallville into Riverdale (Season One Blu-Ray)

Superman and Lois S1 BD

Superhero fans have been largely accepting of the latest CW series, Superman and Lois. And while there have been those all-too-brief, bright and shining moments (that introduction scene of Superman in his Golden Age outfit is insurpassable!), I'm too much of a Superman fan to fully fall in love with this series. And I'll tell you why.

Creepsters: How Can Something This Cuddly Be So Deadly?

Creepsters is the eighth and newest campaign from writer Nasser Rabadi to be added to his ever-growing library of horror-themed novels and comics. Arguably his best work to date, Nasser assembled a creepy team of designers, artists, and toy companies (yes, that’s right, an actual toy company) to produce his idea and make it a reality.

Synopsis: While digging for buried treasure on Perdida Cove Beach, 12-year-old Max discovers a mysterious creature he names Chomper, whose friendship will lead him into a world of danger, adventure, and heroism.

When Chomper's siblings wreak havoc in Max's seaside town, only Max and his new friend can save his sister Emma (and the town!) by combining forces to fight the sinister Creepsters that wash up on the beach after an alien object splashes down into the ocean offshore.

Go Trick-or-Treating in Strangeville this Halloween

Strangeville

Kevin Strange, the creator of Strangeville and director of many “classic” independent films such as COCKHAMMER and the NIXON AND HOGAN film series brings to Indiegogo the newest installment to his comic library: NIXON AND HOGAN’S HORRORWEED HALLOWEEN, just in time for the spooky holiday.

If you are not familiar with Kevin’s movies, imagine Trailer Park Boys, written by 1990’s Kevin Smith, produced by the Insane Clown Posse, then directed by Lloyd Kaufman and that will give you some idea of the madness and degeneracy you will subject yourself to.

Filled with sex, violence, gore, drug use, and home-grown comedy, Kevin and his team at Hack Movies have built a small freaky empire of movies and comics that are the kind your mother warned you about as a child.

Kevin’s fifth and most recent campaign, NIXON and HOGAN’S HORRORWEED HALLOWEEN, is a return to his most popular characters and the wacky misadventures fans of his work have come to love and expect from him.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxies Edge

May the force be with you.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxies Edge is a virtual reality Star Wars game for the Oculus Quest and Quest 2. You play as an unnamed Droid Repair tech who unwittingly gets entangled in a battle against the Guavian Death Gang, and in Last Call you also find yourself battling the First Order.

The game is fast paced with plenty of combat, an array of weapons and upgrades for your character, and quite immersive in terms of interacting with alien creatures, battling groups of enemies, and bumping into furniture in your room! The story is fast paced, and the game is relatively short, but for a VR game this is to be expected. What it lacks in length it more than makes up for in quality in terms of the writing, the gameplay and the environments.

Millar's The Magic Order Returns with a Grand Entrance

Magic Order 2

Cordelia and Regan Moonstone, as well as the rest of the dysfunctional and oh-so-powerful magic users return in this follow-up to Mark Millar's enchantingly entertaining adventure, The Magic Order.

The world has been saved (apparently again) by The Magic Order, a cadre of wizards who live their days in mundane, work-a-day jobs while spending their nights protecting humanity from the things they don't believe in. Stage magician and master escapologist Cordelia has taken her father's seat as the leader of the Order, She's also been reclusive since the events of the first volume of the series, holed up in their magic castle hidden inside a painting in an art gallery in Chicago.

Yes, I wrote that correctly. And that's only the surface level of weirdness you're in for when you open the pages of The Magic Order 2

Time Passes Quickly -- But Drags for the Audience -- in Shyamalan's Old

Old on Blu-ray

Based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Frederik Peeters, this latest venture from M. Night Shyamalan is built around the idea of an isolated beach where time advances at an accelerated rate. Anyone attempting to leave suffers mysterious blackouts and winds back up on the beach, although how they get there is never explained.

Shyamalan successfully blends the relativistic passages of time for the audience. I for one know I felt I had aged 40 years by the time this film was over.

How Counter-Strike Became a Cultural Landmark of Gaming

How Counter-Strike Became a Cultural Landmark of Gaming

When eSports are brought up, naturally, the lane games like Dota 2 and League of Legends are the first titles that come to mind. However, weighing in among them, and even surpassing the eSports titans in many regards, is Counter-Strike. Easily the most popular of the competitive first-person shooters, the franchise has been in circulation for over two decades, with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive now a centerpiece of the gaming world.

Not only is Counter-Strike a thrilling game, as shown by its tremendous player count, but it also makes for great viewing. Sitting only behind Grand Theft Auto V, League of Legends, Valorant, Minecraft, and Apex Legends in total hours of gaming watched on popular platform Twitch in September 2021, CS:GO boasted 61.3 million hours, 22.8 million of which were eSports hours. It’s become a cultural landmark in gaming, but how has it reached these heights?

You're are unraveling a story along while pushing through the game, solving clues and puzzles but your progression will depend on your skills, luck and wit as losing a two round could cost you your life. This is honestly been one of the best purchases we have made in a while and we are in love with this game and can't wait to see what's to come for it and from the developers in the future.

Crazylegs is Crazy Good for the Whole Family

Folk for Little Folk Volume 1

I have learned three things in my 40+ year love affair with Bluegrass/Americana music—I’m talking real Bluegrass: Bill Monroe, The Osbourne Brothers, Earl Scruggs, and more recently Alison Krauss to name but a scant few—and all three are related:

  1. You can’t be feeling mad or sad to play it.
  2. You can’t be mad or sad to listen to it.
  3. If you are mad or sad when you start to listen, you won’t be by the time you’re done listening.

Well folks, Folk for Little Folk is just the right medicine, at the right time, to bring this often mad and seemingly downright sadness-filled society we live in today out of its funk to start enjoying life again! From start to finish, every tune here is inspired to make us (you and me) feel good. I don’t know about you, but isn’t it better to feel good and happy than the other way round’?
