The term "Women in Refrigerators" was coined by comic book writer Gail Simone in reference to a Ron Marz written issue of Green Lantern where Kyle Raynor found his girlfriend dead and literally stuffed into his refrigerator.
Often referenced when a female character dies in order to motivate the male protagonist, 'fridging' has become a commonly used expression.
Yesterday, USA Today released a new image from the upcoming Justice League movie, directed by Zack Snyder. The image depicts the league exiting the "Flying Fox", a ship used to transport the league from one place to another. What's IN the picture isn't very newsworthy, as we see the team we expect exiting a ship.
The image is lacking one particular member of the League: Superman. It's widely known that Superman WILL be in the movie, however the studio isn't ready to share him with the rest of the world just yet. Given his current status (dead), post Batman v Superman, they want to build up to this movie with that knowledge in mind.
So why not just give him to us?
In the article at usatoday.com, Zack Snyder revealed interesting information regarding Wonder Woman's character development:
“(Humanity) has its moments, but it can be brutal, and her coming to terms with that dichotomy is what we come to learn about her. And in Justice League, she’s fully evolved into someone who’s embraced mankind, partly through Superman’s sacrifice. She’s like, ‘All right, I’ve got to pick it up.”
Outside of Superman, Wonder Woman is the biggest hero in terms of power and durability. Aquaman is certainly no slouch, but Wonder Woman is Superman's equal. In Justice League, she has been inspired by Superman's sacrifice to carry the weight of responsibility and carry the torch in the Man of Steel's absence.
In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we learn that she's remained hidden for so long because she's lost faith in humanity. Not only did Superman return Batman's faith, but his unselfish actions has given Wonder Woman hope that humanity is worth saving. In Justice League, we will see the continuation of Wonder Woman's motivation through Superman's sacrifice. And we will see her rise to face the challenges of a world without him.
Superman has officially been 'fridged'.
