Teen Titans: The Judas Contract Adapts Classic Comic into Current DCAU Continuity

Teen Titans: The Judas Contract

Marv Wolfman and George Perez's NEW TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT is one of the seminal stories in comics history. Not just a four-part tale, the story served as an endcap to a long-running plot, revealing that one of the Teen Titans had actually been operating undercover as a spy for Deathstroke, the Terminator.

While this story couldn't be captured accurately in the DC Animated Universe, writer Ernie Altbacker and director Sam Liu came as darn close as they could to the feel of that story and its touchstones, while also staying true to the established DCAU continuity.

The film opens with a vignette of the original Teen Titans: Robin (the Dick Grayson incarnation), Speedy and Kid Flash, with Beast Boy and Bumblebee taking the places of Aqualad and Wonder Girl. The scene details their first encounter with Starfire as they find her in battle with aliens. It's also the first kiss between Robin and Starfire, since Tamaranians absorb language through kissing.

Monster Trucks an 80s-Style Creature-Action Film That's Family Friendly

MONSTER TRUCKS isn't a movie that was really meant to do well on the big screen, much as the hopes of Director CHRIS WEDGE (ICE AGE) might have been otherwise. It has good special effects, and a fairly decent budget, but it's the storyline that holds it back from being a box office success. But that doesn't mean the story is a bad one, it means it simply is what it is -- and about 30 years too late. The film would have done exceedingly well in the 1980s, as it has all the tropes of some of the best not-too-scary monster flicks of that bygone era. Think GREMLINS and E.T.

From Spy to P.I., Archer Season 7 is not P.U.

Archer Season 7

ARCHER Season 7 takes our dysfunctional “family” of spies into a new direction with this 2-disc DVD set from FX and 20th Century Fox.

After failing as government agents-turned-drug-dealers and being blacklisted by the CIA, the team tries their hand at being private investigators. The only one able to get his Private Investigator’s license is Cyril Figgis (voiced by CHRIS PARNELL), so they all reluctantly (except for Cyril) now work for the “Figgis Detective Agency) and set up shop in Los Angeles.

FENCES: A Heart-Wrenching Story of Family and Confinement

Fences

“Some people build fences to keep people out – and other people build fences to keep people in.”

Based on August Wilson's renowned play, FENCES is a stunning, heart-wrenching portrait of a family and a story about feeling trapped in your life.

There’s an old bit of writing advice that I’ve always liked: your character doesn’t need to be likable to hold the audience’s attention – they need to be compelling. FENCES is a prime example of this.

WWE Superstars Go Galactic in New Jetsons Original Movie

Jetsons and WWE Robo WrestleMania

Nothing is going to stop Big Show from taking the WWE belt from Sheamus! And if that means he has to pilot a puddle jumper from Denver to Albuquerque in a blizzard, against the advice of Mr. McMahon, then so be it!

Unfortunately for Big Show, his plane goes down in the ice, and he remains frozen for 100 years, until he's found by George Jetson on a special assignment for Mr. Spacely. Once properly thawed, Big Show is astounded at the world he's awakened to, with all its robots, buttons, flying cars and talking dogs. But he's still intent on becoming the WWE Champion -- even if WWE has been changed to World Wrobot (the 'W' is silent) Entertainment, where robotic doppelgangers of past WWE Superstars do all the wrestling.

Volume 1 of Mickey and the Roadster Racers Zooms Onto DVD

Mickey and the Roadster Racers Volume 1 on DVD

For the longest time, Disney Junior was turned on in our house so that our little boy could get his fill of MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE. Now that he's older, he's a bit past interacting with the television screen to pick a Mouse-ka-tool, but he still loves Mickey Mouse, his Hot Wheels, and his racetrack sets.

Which makes MICKEY AND THE ROADSTER RACERS a natural for him. (And I fully expect there to be a Disney racetrack of the vehicles just in time for Santa to impact my budget this year.)

Ninjago Season Six More Than You Could Wish For

The Ninja have dealt with ghosts before. Shoot, one of their own is a ghost! So when one of their old enemies, Clouse, returns from the dead (since the Ninja masters have destroyed the Cursed Realm), they assume it's going to be an easy catch. What they didn't plan on was Clouse finding an enchanted teapot which he knew to house a djinn that could grant him three wishes.

Unfortunately for Clouse -- and soon everyone else -- the djinn, Nadakhan, knew how to twist words if you weren't extremely specific, so that your third and final wish was always to wish it all away. That's the wish that would trap you in his sword forever.

Watching the Detectives: BBC's SHERLOCK and DIRK GENTLY

Watson and Sherlock and Dirk and Todd

Mysteries abound from the BBC, as one detective cuts through the chaff to find the hidden connection while the other blithely pinballs from event to event claiming that everything is connected. That's the Doyle/Adams dichotomy that exists between SHERLOCK and DIRK GENTLY'S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY, both of which are now available on Blu-ray and digital release.

Strange Days Indeed: Marvel's Doctor Strange Released to Blu-ray

Own Doctor Strange, now on Blu-ray

Remember when Robert Downey Jr. was cast to play Tony Stark in IRON MAN, and everyone said how he was perfect for the role?

I wonder if the big screen will ever be big enough to fit Downey's Tony Stark and Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange at the same time--because the British actor who gave us a new SHERLOCK is absolutely spot-on as the egotistical Dr. Strange!

Out today on Blu-ray and DVD is Marvel Entertainment's DOCTOR STRANGE, directed by Scott Derrickson, and co-starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Strange's estranged (no pun intended) girlfriend, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One. The film wastes no time showing us the character flaws as well as the innate genius of surgeon savant Dr. Stephen Strange before diving right into the accident that ruins his hands and sends him on a quest for the medical miracle to repair them.

Heh Heh! This is Cool! Beavis and Butt-Head: The Complete Collection on DVD

Beavis and Butt-Head Complete Collection on DVD

I have sometimes wondered to myself: Am I the only person in existence that still has a Beavis and Butt-Head “Final Word”” still in original package? I don’t know. But what I do know is that now, finally, the world of Beavis and Butt-Head is available in a comprehensive 12 DVD set that includes every season, the music videos, a collector’s edition of the movie “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America," the original un-cut short “Frog Baseball,” and a plethora of other extras that includes everything from VMA appearances, a Thanksgiving Special with Kurt Loder, the 95’96’ Butt-Bowls, the MTV 20th Anniversary Special, a 2011 Comicon Panel featuring Mike Judge and moderator Johnny Knoxville, and  seemingly countless promos, montages and more.

Arrival Comes to Blu-ray and Digital, Brings No Excitement

Arrival on Blu-ray

Not since M. Night Shyamalan's SIGNS has there been an alien encounter story as sedate as Denis Villeneuve's ARRIVAL. It's an apt comparison, because the audience is mislead by nonlinear storytelling, beginning before the arrival of the aliens and the film's leading lady's encounter with them.

Amy Adams plays Louis Banks, a master linguist who has helped the U.S. Army on past occassions with translations. When a dozen alien ships arrive and park themselves around the planet, the Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker) brings her in to assist mathematician Ian Donnelly (JEREMY RENNER) to somehow communicate with these aliens so we can find out what they want.

Let's Go PJ Masks!

Let's Go PJ Masks! on DVD

Kids by day. Superheroes (and villains) by night. When the sun goes down, these students slip into their PJs and into action as the PJ Masks -- Owlette, Gekko and Catboy!

This Disney Junior original series taps into the superhero inside all of us, as Amaya, Greg, and Connor discover problems at school during the day and then make them right at night as the PJ Masks team. And they do it not with their super powers (although they certainly help!) but with teamwork, sacrifice, and other life lessons that make them role models for younger (and older) viewers everywhere.

The Justice League Takes a Darker Turn in JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

Justice League Dark on Blu-ray

When people across the country begin to go on killing sprees, blaming their outbursts on visions of demons and monsters, Superman (JERRY O'CONNELL) and Wonder Woman (ROSARIO DAWSON) suspect the supernatural may be involved. But Batman (JASON O'MARA) has his doubts--even though, as is pointed out, the Justice League has encountered magic a number of times. It doesn't take long, however, thanks to the intervention of Deadman (NICHOLAS TURTURRO), before Batman seeks out an old ally in Zatanna (CAMILLA LUDDINGTON). He needs her to find John Constantine (voiced, appropriately, by CONSTANTINE actor, MATT RYAN), who resides in the interdimensional House of Mystery.

Rizzoli & Isles Final Season Hits DVD

Rizzoli & Isles Season 7 (and Final)

Tess Gerritson's crimefighting duo reaches the end of the line of their television capers, with the impeccable Dr. Maura Isles (SASHA ALEXANDER) dealing with a head trauma injury that seems to have activated a genetic brain disorder that manifests in dizzy spells and forgetfulness. For the woman who is used to always being the smartest person in the room, this is a little more than unsettling, and several of the early episodes follow Maura's personal path as she pursues treatment options. Meanwhile, Detective Jane Rizzoli (ANGIE HARMON) is offered an opportunity to pursue a career with the FBI.

Maximum Ride Delivers Minimal Enjoyment

Maximum Ride on DVD

Director Jay Martin's vision of James Patterson's MAXIMUM RIDE is less of a movie and more of a CW series pilot -- and not a great one.

Allie Marie Evans (VANITY) plays Max, the heroine of Patterson's tale of a band of children who have been freed from a scientific facility known as "The School," where they were kept in cages while medical experiments were conducted upon them. They're special, because they have functioning wings. The kids -- Max, Fang (EXTANT's Patrick Johnson), Angel (Lyliana Wray), Gazz (Gavin Lewis), Nudge (Tetona Jackson) and Iggy (Zayne Emory) are now living in hiding, having been abandoned by the doctor who rescued them from the facility, Jeb (Peter O'Brien, WINTER), with no idea of Jeb's fate.

Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season on DVD

Fear the Walking Dead S2

I was given a copy of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD: The Complete Second Season to review. For those who aren’t familiar with the show, it’s a prequel to AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD and is supposed to give a view of the apocalypse in the beginning stages.

In season two, the cast moves from the hills of Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean, traveling along the coast in a yacht named The Abigail. The group discovers the water holds as much danger as land, as they meet new friends and new dangers--and even more dangerous foes.

Bob Hope: Hope for the Holidays

Bob Hope: Hope for the Holidays on DVD

The world lost a fine entertainer when Bob Hope died. I grew up watching him go "on the road" with Bing Crosby and perform in his many other comedy films. But Bob was more than just that. His numerous trips overseas, sacrificing time with his family to entertain U.S. troops, made him a national treasure.

We may have lost Bob, but thanks to DVDs like this one, we'll never lose Hope.

HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS collects two of Hope's more memorable television holiday specials -- BOB HOPE'S BAG FULL OF CHRISTMAS MEMORIES (1993) and THE COMEDY HOUR (1950).
