Galaxy Quest 20 Year

Has it really been twenty years since TIM ALLEN, SIGOURNEY WEAVER, ALAN RICKMAN, TONY SHALHOUB, SAM ROCKWELL and DARYL MITCHELL took off aboard the NSEA Protector to explore the farthest corners of the galaxy -- only to have their voyage cancelled on a cliffhanger? See, GALAXY QUEST was just a television show, a science fiction classic beloved by fans and made into the centerpiece of conventions, much to the chagrin of the actors of the series -- Jason Nesmith, Gwen DeMarco, Alexander Dane, Fred Kwan, Guy Fleegman, and Tommy Webber -- who found themselves typecast into their roles and condemned to make a living through special appearances and autographing photos. The only one really into it is Nesmith (ALLEN), but when he overhears two teens talking about how pathetic his life must be, it shakes his confidence.

That's when Nesmith meets a group of ardent fans who need his help. That is, he believes them to be fans, wanting him to do a quick appearance in a fan-film. What he discovers is that they are real aliens, led by Mathesar (ENRICO COLANTONI, VERONICA MARS). The Thermians have seen episodes of GALAXY QUEST broadcast through space, and believe them to be "historical documents," the concept of pretending and acting being foreign to them. The Thermians are an oppressed people, and they need "Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" to lead the negotiations with their enemy, Sarris (ROBIN SACHS). Believe it to be an act and rushing through the scene, Nesmith gives the order to fire all weapons on Sarris' ship. Only when returned home does he realize he was really in space, with real aliens.

And when the aliens return, needing him now to negotiate their surrender to a still-living Sarris, it will take the entire crew to pull this off. Because the Thermians have built their ship identical to the fictional Protector, and it operates only the way the television programs showed, including a computer that only responds by using Gwen DeMarco's character as a vocal intermediary.

In a form of life imitating art, the film GALAXY QUEST itself became the cult classic it created, bringing together a talented cast, and launching the careers of newer actors, like JUSTIN LONG who got his break in this film playing a fanboy who obsesses over the show's details and proves to be a key player in the resolution of the final dilemma.
