This just in: The X-Files is officially returning to FOX! Thirteen years after its original run, the sci-fi series is making its comeback with a six-episode event series from creator/executive producer Chris Carter. Stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

"I think of it as a 13-year commercial break," said Carter. "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."

The series is set to start production in summer 2015, but an air date has not yet been set.

Commentary: They have been hinting at this for a while now, and I’m glad to see it was finally confirmed.  The X-Files was ahead of its time when it came to serialized drama.  So many shows these days all seem to use the “monster of the week” alternating with a bigger plot that X-Files really popularized.   It was also supernatural and weird long before shows like Sleepy Hollow.

My only real concern here is that at this point, is there still a place for The X-Files?  I definitely like to think so, but the last movie that came out a few years ago felt a little too nostalgic and like they didn’t have a lot of new things to say.  I really hope that they can prove me wrong.  X-Files, especially with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson is just too great to keep sitting on the shelf forever.

The really nice part is that it’s not a remake and they are not bringing in a bunch of kids to take over the show…at least it didn’t seem like it according to the press release.  It’s the Original G X-Files up in here!
