Power Rangers News: Season 23 debut date and Season 24 Announced!

Saban has announced the debut date of Power Rangers Dino Super Charge along with some information on what the future holds for the franchise.

Dino Super Charge will be returning January 30 on Nickelodeon.  Saban is saying that Dino Super Charge will feature the biggest team of Power Rangers yet with ten active Rangers.  We have already met the Red, Blue, Pink, Black, Green, Gold, Graphite and Purple Rangers.  And last season we found out that there was someone out there who had bonded to the Aqua Energem.  Can't wait to see who the Aqua Ranger is and who our mysterious tenth Ranger is too.

For more on Dino Charge, please check out my earlier "Critical Depth" columns.

Marvel continues their plan to dominate all media with Jessica Jones

My wife and I binged watched JESSICA JONES over the holiday break.  We were so engaged with the show that we ended up knocking off 4 or even 5 episodes off at a time.  JESSICA JONES is the television adaptation of the comic series, ALIAS, which we both loved.

A Win for Supergirl is a Win for Women Everywhere

The 2015 People's Choice awards were held last night and SUPERGIRL took home the award for best new drama!

When the show was first announced, while it was met with much excitement, there was concern about how it would fare on CBS. Being a major network means that it would be on a short leash as far as ratings go.

A show like SUPERGIRL seemed more appropriate for 'The CW' where established hit drama's, ARROW and THE FLASH, continue to have success.

Doctor Who Series 9 and an early look at this year's Christmas Special

It’s Christmas time!  While most people are thinking of Santa, I’m thinking of that other eternal figure, The Doctor!  This year’s Christmas special is called “The Husbands of River Song.”

We’ll be posting a review up after it airs, but for now, have some trailers!

Critical Depth - Power Rangers Dino Charge Part 3

So what is it that makes Dino Charge so special?

Like I said when I started this, I really didn’t have a strong bond to Power Rangers growing up.  I did think the martial arts they showed off in the show were cool, especially the Green Ranger (Jason David Frank), but it wasn’t anything I went out of my way to watch.  If I turned on TV and it was on, then I watched it.

Critical Depth - Power Rangers Dino Charge Part 2

Welcome to part 2 of our deep dive into Power Rangers: Dino Charge!

The Power Rangers

First of all, I thought the casting was great.  All of the Rangers were good actors, and they all brought their characters to life brilliantly.  Usually there is at least one (maybe more) Rangers that annoy me, but I thought each Ranger was given a strong personality in Dino Charge.

Critical Depth - Power Rangers Dino Charge Part 1

Before we get started here, huge shout out to my friend, Brian Clark.   I am terrible about naming things.  That has been a long-standing issue for me.  In the past, I have done a few of these deep dive columns where I talk a look at a topic and go into obsessive detail about it.  In the past I've done "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the DC Multiverse" and "The Beginner's Guide to Doctor Who."  I have hated both those names, but I felt they needed a name, so that is what I came up with.  I had opened this up to some friends, and Brian got back to me immediately with Critical Depth. Which I loved, so it's the winner.

Catching Up: The Flash Episode 209, "Running to Stand Still"

Flash CW Running Stand Still Trickster Mark Hamill Weather Wizard

Merry Christmas, Flash-fanatics! As a special treat for all of you (or maybe just for me), the CW has brought back the Rogues -- Weather Wizard (Liam McIntyre), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and my personal favorite looney-tunes, The Trickster (Mark Hamill)!

The episode opens with a confrontation between Zoom and Doctor Harrison Wells of Earth-2 (Tom Cavanagh of Earth-Prime). Zoom wants something from Wells, which is why he's been keeping Wells' daughter, Jesse (Violett Beane) hostage. Wells talks the demonic dervish into getting more time to make his decision, and then for the bulk of the episode seems pre-occupied.

So, Frosty The Snowman, Santa Claus, and Rudolph all walk into a box set. Have you heard this one?

Christmas Classics Rudolph Frosty Santa

Growing up, the holiday season was a time to look forward to for all of the obvious reasons.  Receiving gifts was a huge part of childhood, all the decorations, visiting Santa, and spending time with extended family was something to look forward to.  Another big thing were all of the holiday specials on television.  When I grew up, especially in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, you didn’t get but one chance to see these shows each year.  It might seem impossible to people even a little younger than me, but there was no DVR, and I didn’t have a VCR until 1983, so I had to check my TV GUIDE and get my arse in front of the television at the appropriate time.  If you missed your favorite there simply wasn’t a second chance!

Catching Up: Arrow Episode 208, "Legends of Yesterday"

Arrow Legends of Yesterday Hawkman Hawgirl Flash

The introduction of Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Vandal Savage to the DCCW Universe (as well as the introduction of the upcoming LEGENDS OF TOMORROW series) continues with the second part of the ARROW/THE FLASH crossover, which began here.

The episode opens with a flashback to ancient Egypt, where we learn that meteors have been falling with regularity, striking the kingdom. Prince Khufu brings offerings to Horus, but the priestess, Shayara (I know, they're going with Chay-Ara here, but I still miss my Thanagarian Shayara), says the offerings are meager. What we learn shortly after is that Khufu and Shayara are lovers, and Vandal Savage becomes aware of this.

Legends of Tomorrow to debut January 21

Yesterday, WB announced when some of their new shows will be launching and returning.  Tops on the list for me is the much anticipated Legends of Tomorrow!   Legends of Tomorrow is a spin-off from Arrow and Flash.  Arthur Darvill (Rory from Doctor who) plays Rip Hunter who comes back from the 22nd century to put together a team to stop Vandal Savage (played by Casper Crump).  The team consists of Atom (Brandon Routh), White Canary (Caity Lotz), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Hawkman (Falk Hentschel), Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée), and Firestorm—the new team of Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jefferson “Jax” Jackson (Franz Drameh).

HBO's The Leftovers Takes Time to Warm Up

HBO Leftovers Season One Critical Blast Dennis Russo

THE LEFTOVERS, an HBO series, is a complex story that takes place three years after an “event” happens where 120 million people -- 2% of the world’s population -- disappeared in an instant. It centers on the town of Mapleton, New York where 100 people disappeared and the local sheriff, Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), is trying to hold his family together while simultaneously trying to keep the peace and help people get on with their lives.

Some people said, and still say, that the event was the Rapture, while some say it isn’t that because not everyone was a good person that disappeared. Others still look to some sort of scientific physics-based explanation to the phenomenon.

Holy Home Video Release, Batman! It's Time to Relive the Mania of 1960s Batman.

Batman 1966 Season 3 Warner Home Video DVD Critical Blast

BATMAN: SEASON 3 DVD
Warner Bros. Entertainment
$39.98 SRP

Being a kid growing up in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, you didn’t have the television world at your fingertips.  There were literally seven channels for me to watch until I was about ten years old.  During the week, the only kid-friendly shows were on in the early morning till maybe 9 o’clock then in the afternoon from say 3-6pm.  Oddly, a lot of the shows weren’t even cartoons.  Instead it was shows like GET SMART, THE BRADY BUNCH, and the Adam West BATMAN that helped keep me entertained.

Catching Up: The Flash Episode 207, "Gorilla Warfare"

Gorilla Warfare Flash Grodd CW Critical Blast RJ Carter

After his battle with Zoom, Barry (Grant Gustin) was left without feeling in his legs. In case you were worried, don't be; he's got a very fast metabolism, and he heals pretty fast. His broken back is already mostly stitched back together as this episode opens.

However, while Barry is almost walking, his running speed isn't back. It's not the physical damage, but the emotional damage that leaves The Flash crippled. He was dragged all over Central City by Zoom, and the city that depended on The Flash to be their hero has now seen him defeated, and that has given him a mental block about using his abilities.

(By the way, this isn't the first time the hero has faced this kind of a physical challenge.)
