My Two-Bits: Doctor Who: The Curse of Fatal Death
We are about a month out from Doctor Who Season 10 (APRIL 15th)! This season is the last season for star Peter Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat. But what some people may not know is that Moffat got his start with Doctor Who way back in 1999. As part of Comic Relief, BBC had put together a very funny Doctor Who parody written by Moffat and starring Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor, Julia Sawalha as his companion, Jonathan Pryce (as the Master), and Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, and Joanna Lumley as later incarnations of the Doctor.
Heading to their 2017 Red Nose Day, BBC and Comic Relief has re-released The Curse of Fatal Death, and it’s really worth checking out:
In retrospect, this special deals with quite a few things that have come up during Steven Moffat’s run on Doctor Who.
-
The Doctor having a romantic relationship with one of his companions was something that never came up during Classic Who.
-
The idea of a Time Lord regenerating as the opposite sex. This is particularly interesting now because BBC is looking to cast a new Doctor Who, and there have been some persistent rumors that Tilda Swinton or Hayley Atwell have been considered for the role.
One last thing about The Curse of Fatal Death. Rowan Atkinson and Jonathan Pryce manage to do a real funny parody of Doctor Who, but at the same time, it’s so respectful of the source material. I loved that BBC was willing to let these guys mock one of their biggest properties. The end result is something endearing that really holds up 18 years after it’s debut.
