Launch into Nostalgia with Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space

Josie Pussycats Outer Space Complete

Josie and the Pussycats were the quintessential teen rock band of animated cartoons. Spinning out of Archie Comics and travelling the globe to spread their music far and wide, the only way the animated series could top itself was for Dan DeCarlo's little girl to take the show to a whole new level.

Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space didn't get an origin episode to launch this new endeavor. It didn't need one. The show's musical intro ingeniously did this in just a couple of beats, showing how a photo opportunity for a space launch went awry when Alexandra pushed her way to the front of the group, knocking them all into the rocket and accidentally pulling the launch lever. Now they careen throughout space, looking for a way to get back home to Earth.

Who doesn’t love a good horror flick, or a good horror tale, every once in a while?

One of the main attractions in fiction and fantasy, horror movies take every opportunity to portray the dark sides of life as a means to scary onlookers. Such tactics include:

Missy Takes On A New Role as The Doctor in Titan Comics Newest

Doctor Who: Missy #1

Before The Doctor regenerated into a female form portrayed by Jodie Whittaker on the popular BBC series, Doctor Who, the possibility of transgendered regenerations was telegraphed by the newest incarnation of The Doctor's greatest nemesis -- the Time Lord who went by the label of The Master. Although, once female, the name was hardly appropriate, as the newly rechristened Missy (Michelle Gomez, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) stated emphatically.

Hawk and Rev Slay Vampires and Audiences Alike in Horror-Comedy

Hawk & Rev: Vampire Slayers

Comedy and horror, though wildly different avenues for creative storytelling, share a common bloodline. Both rely on stock situational premises that slowly build tension until reaching a climax centered around surprise. Their divergence rests upon intent: where the culmination of a joke (hopefully) is to make an audience laugh, the pinnacle of any horror scene (hopefully) is the invocation of fear. Some filmmakers understand the structural thematic genre links and aspire to craft cinematic fusions between the two, but the results aren’t always silver screen sublimity: for every Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein or Evil Dead 2 or Zombieland, a dozen cadavers like Idle Hands, My Boyfriend’s Back and Dark Shadows lie D.O.A. at the movie morgue. It’s a precarious tightrope to walk: too many comedic yucks dilute the yuckiness of the horror and vice versa, but brave souls continually endeavor to strike that perfected balance.

Joe Hill the Best Thing to Happen to Sandman Since Neil Gaiman

Locke & Key / The Sandman: Hell & Gone 1

Ever since the classic Vertigo series, The Sandman, had run its course, there have been a handful of attempts to recapture that lightning and put it once again into a bottle -- an intentional allusion, as The Sandman begins with Morpheus having been captured in a glass prison much like a bottle for several decades. The attempts have had varying degrees of success, with most being hollow copies of the style and some just not getting the gestalt at all.

Enter Joe Hill. Already quite a name for horror in the comics industry, for graphic novels like Basketful of Heads and the Hill House titles written for DC Comics, Hill brings to readers a new and exciting chapter in his Locke & Key series, and is joined in that endeavor by that book's co-creator, Gabriel Rodriguez.

Dynamite's Superhero Experiments with Vampirella, Red Sonja Converge into Unified Story

Vampirella Red Sonja Project Superpowers

Dan Abnett has been writing one story from intersecting trajectories for the past few months. With Red Sonja: Superpowers, he has used the Project: Superpowers team to bring the She-Devil with a Sword into their overarching continuity. Meanwhile, in Vampirella: The Dark Powers, we've seen Vampi join the team after her own plural Earth (number 0666, naturally) is discovered. Both stories have been similar -- members of the same team traveling to parallel Earths, meeting our vixens, having an adventure, and recruiting them to their ranks.

Nicky the Pixie Takes Critical Blast Bombshell of the Year for 2020

2020 Bombshell of the Year Nicky the Pixie

The Critical Blast awards have all been announced, but we saved the best for last: the Bombshell of the Year for 2020, based on our readers votes of all twelve of our Bombshell of the Month nominees for the prior year. And while we wanted to announce this earlier this year (we knew the results as of February 1st), we wanted to wait on this one until our Bombshell had her award in-hand, and that meant waiting for order to be taken and to arrive -- which was slightly more complicated this year due to Covid's impact on many trophy shops, many of which rely on intramural high school sports for their income. (This year's trophies came from Icon Trophies and Designs.)

Absolute's First Defense Makes Superheroes of Presidential Kids

First Defense 1, 2

Spinning out of the Absolute Comics digital miniseries The First Daughter comes First Defense, where Tasha Tasker, the teenaged daughter of newly elected President Brad Tasker discovers her role as a super-powered First Kid isn't perhaps as unique as she thought it was.

It turns out the gray alien, Nom, who instilled her with superpowers, has been busy for a number of years, dating all the way back to the Lincoln administration -- back when he gave superpowers to First Daughter Abby Lincoln.

What's that? There was no "Abby Lincoln?" Well that's exactly what you're supposed to believe. Because every Presidential kid given super powers had to be kept so secret, they were systematically removed from history completely.

McCarthy, Spencer Unlikely Superheroes in Netflix B-Movie, Thunder Force

Thunder Force

Lydia and Emily become best friends in grade school by virtue of both being social misfits. Emily was the curve-blowing smart kid, while Lydia was the sleep-in-class and deliver answers cribbed from Peppermint Patty. But when they have a falling out, they lose touch with each other for twenty years, until Lydia (Melissa McCarthy) decides to reach out to Emily (Octavia Spencer) to attend their class reunion. Through a series of childish missteps, Lydia accidentally obtains super powers from an experiment Lydia's tech company was working on.

The setting for Thunder Force is one where cosmic rays bombarded the world decades ago, creating genetic mutations in a small minority of people, giving them super abilities. Unfortunately, all these people turned out to be sociopaths dubbed "miscreants." One of them killed Emily's parents, and she's devoted her entire life to finding a way to grant super powers to someone who could fight the miscreants on their own level.

Grimm Tales of Terror Quarterly Delivers Novel-Length Serial Killer Horror

Grimm Tales of Terror Quarterly H.H. Holmes

H.H. Holmes was a serial killer operating in Chicago nearly a century ago. That's not a fiction -- he actually existed. So now you've learned something.

Building on the points of Holmes' so-called "Murder Castle" hotel built near the 1893 World's Fair Exposition, Jay Sandlin's story takes place in the Gemini Hotel, where another spate of murders has begun to take place, murders that seem to match the methods of Holmes. Has the notorious killer returned from beyond the grave? Is there someone seeking to copycat his infamy? That's what former Chicago Detective, Susan Murphy, must discover. Murphy is the head of hotel security, having left the police force under bizarre circumstances which are revealed in flashbacks; however, those events promise a lot and deliver nothing when it comes to this particular story. Perhaps in a future tale where Murphy is a character we will get some closure to her last peculiar case.

Keenspot Continues Political Parodyverse with Biden's Titans

Biden's Titans

Every political administration has seen itself lampooned and parodied in comics format, whether in newspaper strips or comic books. Most of these have been relegated to a one-shot, either because of a lack of material or a lack of imagination.

Neither of these are presenting a roadblock to Keenspot, publisher of the former Trump's Titans , The Donald Who Laughs, and The Superior AOC. A change in the administration in the real world gets reflected just as quickly in this parodyverse of John Barron's devising.

Our April Bombshell isn't Fooling: Meet Ready Cosplayer One

Bombshell 2021 04

April. It's the month of fooling (as the weather is capable of doing lately, tricking us into believing it will be warm only to surprise us again with a quick chill), as well as the month of baskets of sweet things and pretty outfits. Well, we can't deliver any colored eggs your way, but we can deliver some sweet cosplay which, not necessarily coincidentally, involves pretty outfits. And be sure about our latest cosplayer -- she's certainly not fooling around with her skills!

Every month our staff combs the cosplay community for up-and-coming cosplayers who deserve to have a broader audience for their work, taking into account not only costuming skills and photogenic presence, but also how they use that ability in service to others. Through this, we've not only met some talented cosplayers, but also some fine human beings. If you got inspired to cosplay, click here for more cosplay ideas.

Wonder Woman 1984 a Less Lustrous Sequel

Wonder Woman 1984 Blu-ray

I've had my misgivings about WONDER WOMAN 1984 ever since seeing the psychedelic poster with the golden angel armor. And while the armor fits nicely into the story, and with a decent reason attached to it (save for how Diana brought it to America, unless she's making back-and-forth trips to Themyscira), it's really there just to set up the nostalgic wink in the post-credits scene of the film.

In 1984, Diana (Gal Gadot) is working as an antiquities expert in a museum while also doing the whole Wonder Woman thing on the side. Apparently the directors almost forgot that Batman himself was unable to uncover any evidence of Diana after her photo taken in World War I, so we see one obligatory "take out the security cameras" scene, albeit surely too little too late. Still, the rest of the film beggars credulity that Diana could have kept herself so far out of the public eye while simultaneously appearing so publicly so often.

Can Harley Quinn Make it as a Hero?

Harley Quinn Infinite Frontier

Or, more to the point, can Harley Quinn hold her own title as a hero, rather than the madcap sorta-villain with muddled romantic mixup between Joker and Poison Ivy? That's what we will find out, as Stephanie Phillips and Riley Rossmo open a brand new chapter in Gotham's most unpredictable character.

Fresh from the pages of Joker War, Harley is turning over a new leaf -- and has the reluctant support of Batman. We've seen Batman try to redeem Harley in the past, such as in the "Harley's Holiday" episode of Batman: The Animated Series, but he is much less hopeful here about her capabilities to walk the straight and narrow.
